Back in September, renowned crypto expert Bruce Schneier announced his intention to survey the world market of cryptographic products. His goal is to compile a list of encryption products that can be used to protect arbitrary data and messages. That is, he is not interested in products that are specifically designed for a narrow application, like financial transactions, or products that provide authentication or data integrity. He is interested in products that people like FBI director James Comey can possibly claim help criminals communicate securely. Schneier’s goal is to show policymakers how international the cryptographic market is, and how much of it is not under their control.
Together with a student at Harvard University, Schneier has compiled a list of products from many different countries. cryptovision’s e-mail encryption solution s/mail is mentioned on the list. s/mail easily ranks among the top products surveyed, as it has been on the market for over ten years and it has “VS- Nur für den Dienstgebrauch”, NATO Restricted and EU Restricted approvals, which is extremely rare.
